As temperatures drop in Ontario, homeowners often notice new fall invaders creeping toward their homes. One pest that has been making headlines in recent years is the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. It is an invasive species now spreading across the province.
What are Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs?
Originally from Asia, these bugs are known for their shield shaped body and the strong odour they release when disturbed. While they don't bite or cause direct harm to people, they're a major nuisance pest that tries to overwinter inside homes, cottages and businesses. Outdoors, they're also harmful to farmers and gardeners because they feed on fruits, vegetables and crops.
Why Are They a Problem in Ontario?
Stink Bugs are masters at sneaking indoors during fall. They crawl through cracks in siding, gaps around windows, soffits and even electrical outlets to find warm hiding spots. Once inside, they gather in large numbers and are extremely difficult to control without professional pest control services.
How to Keep Them Out
The best way to prevent a stink bug invasion is with exclusion and sealing services:
Seal cracks and gaps around doors, windows, soffits and siding.
Reduce moisture issues in basements, crawl spaces and attics.
Keep food sources and clutter to a minimum.
If you are already seeing them, vacuum them up (dispose of the bag right away) and call a licensed pest control company for long-term solutions.
