Cluster Flies

If you've ever noticed slow, buzzing flies around your windows or attic, especially on warm winter days, chances are you're dealing with cluster flies. A very common pest problem across Ontario cottage country.

At Balson Pest Control, we specialize in cluster fly removal and seasonal fly treatments that work. Here's what you need to know if you're tired of them coming back year after year.

What are cluster flies?

Cluster flies are larger and slower than houseflies. Unlike regular flies, they don't come from garbage or drains. Instead, they lay their eggs in the soil where their larvae feed on earthworms. While they're harmless, they're definitely a nuisance.

Why are flies in My Attic or Windows?

Cluster flies look for warmth and shelter as temperatures drop in late summer and fall. They sneak into cracks around your siding, windows, soffits and attic vents and then go dormant behind your walls.

When the weather warms up, even briefly, they wake up and try to get back outside. That is why you often find them gathering around windows or buzzing around light fixtures.

Why Do Cluster Flies Keep Coming Back?

Cluster flies return to the same spot every year unless the entry points are properly sealed and preventative exterior treatments are done in time. This is especially common in older homes and cottages around Georgian Bay, Muskoka, Midland and surrounding areas.

How to Get Rid of Cluster Flies

Here are our top recommendations for cluster flies:

  • Book a late summer exterior spray to prevent flies from entering your house in the first place.

  • Attic fogging and cracks & crevice treatment - Eliminate dormant flies

  • Seal all cracks and gaps in severe situations.
