Summer in Ontario means longer days, cottage weekends and patio nights but it also brings out some of the worst pests. Whether you're living in town or spending weekends up north, certain critters and insects love the heat just as much as we do. Here are the top five pests to watch out for this summer and what you can do to stay one step ahead.
Mosquitoes
They're more than just annoying. Mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus and other illnesses. Standing water from rain barrels, bird baths and clogged gutters create the perfect breeding ground for them. Professional mosquito treatments can drastically reduce their numbers, especially if done on a 14 to 21 day rotation.
Pro Tip:
Eliminate standing water around your home and consider a barrier spray treatment if you spend a lot of time outdoors.
Wasps & Hornets
These stingers become aggressive in the late summer and will fiercely protect their nests. They often build homes in soffits, eaves, sheds or ground burrows. DIY removal can be dangerous. It's always better to call a professional for safe elimination.
Watch For:
Increased wasp activity near wooden fences, deck boards or the corners of buildings.
Ants
Carpenter ants are especially damaging as they tunnel through wood to build nests, often causing hidden structural damage. Pavement ants on the other hand, show up in kitchens and bathrooms looking for food.
Keep In Mind:
Ants leave scent trails. Wipe surfaces with vinegar based cleaners and seal off food sources.
Raccoons
Cute but destructive, racoons are notorious for breaking into garbage bins, attics and even under decks. In summer, they're often raising babies and can become even more aggressive.
Secure It:
Lock garbage bins, close up entry points around the home and call for humane removal if you suspect raccoons have moved in.
Mice
Although often associated with fall, mice can easily make their way indoors during summer construction or when food is left out. Once in, they multiply quickly.
Prevent It:
Seal gaps around doors, windows and utility lines. Don't leave pet food or crumbs over night.
