If you think groundhogs are just cute backyard visitors, think again.

These burrowing animals can cause serious structural damage to homes, sheds and commercial buildings and the longer they're left alone, the worse the damage gets.

Why Groundhogs Are a Threat to Your Property

Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are expert diggers. Their burrows can stretch up to 45 feet long and go as deep as 5 feet below the surface. While these tunnels might seem harmless at first glance, they can create serious problems:

  • Foundation Cracks: Groundhog tunnels can erode soil beneath foundations, leading to cracks and instability.

  • Basement Leaks: Burrowing can disrupt natural drainage patterns, causing water to pool against or seep into your basement walls.

  • Collapsed Concrete: Patios, sidewalks and decks are at risk of collapsing if the soil underneath is undermined by groundhog activity.

  • Undermined Sheds & Pool Equipment: Groundhogs often target quiet corners. They like under sheds, decks and pool equipment where they can dig undisturbed.

Signs of Groundhog Damage

It's no always obvious that a groundhog is to blame.

Watch out for:

  • Large, crescent shaped holes near the foundation

  • Piles of displaced earth

  • Sinking or cracked concrete slabs

  • Sudden drainage issues or water pooling

Why You Shouldn't DIY Groundhog Removal

Live trapping and relocating groundhogs sound easy but it rarely is. Improper removal can lead to:

  • Re-Infestation (they'll come back or another animal will move in)

  • Unethical or Illegal relocation

  • Injuries to the animal or the person handling the trap

At Balson Pest Control, our groundhog exclusion services include humane trapping, environmentally safe relocation and long-term prevention solutions, including screening and concrete infill to seal off tunnels and prevent future digging.
